We are a hands-on design studio that specializes in reviving old homes in a fresh way - approachable, respectful, and a little bit whimsical.
Our design services are tailored to you and your vintage property’s needs.
Interior design for old homes involves a thoughtful balance between honoring the property's historical character and incorporating modern functionality. We always strive to retain original features or reintroduce appropriate replacements in terms of moldings, hardware, and built-ins in order to enhance the space's charm while providing a backdrop for contemporary decor.
Choosing a color palette that complements the period style, along with furniture and accessories that reflect both aesthetics and comfort, creates inviting spaces that respect the past while adapting to present-day needs. Careful selection of textiles and art as the final step serves to bridge the gap between eras, resulting in a harmonious blend meant to celebrate the home’s and owners’ unique story.
Wherever you are in need of help in the process - from initial consultation on where to buy your future property, to final decoration or styling and everything in between, Studio Sub Rosa has the experience and knowledge without any pretension.
Allison grew up in a nondescript suburban “colonial revival” from the early 80s and began hunting down charming old and historic houses with a strange passion bordering on obsession as a teenager. It’s a love that’s simply a part of her.
She is a designer and craftsperson with a DIY ethos who entered her career as a metalsmith before the inevitable pull back to old houses. She designs with the practicality of a craftsperson and the sensitivity of a true old house lover.
Home is in the Hudson Valley, where she and her husband are restoring their 200-year-old farmhouse that was formerly a funeral home. A love of travel brings her to projects in the Catskills, Berkshires, New York City, Long Island, and wherever there may be an old home in need.
When she is not working on houses she is keeping shop in her antiques and art store, Sub Rosa.
A labor of love working on our 200-year-old home.
